How We Research
Every guide here starts with one question: will this machine make the drinks you want, in your kitchen, without becoming a chore? That means the drinks you make most, the counter space you have and the upkeep you are willing to do.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with the drinks you make
Someone who drinks black coffee needs a different machine from someone who makes two lattes every morning. So we sort machines by milk system first: one-touch milk, a manual frother or no milk at all.
When a machine can't make a drink well, we say so plainly.
2. We compare the specs
We look at width, height and depth, the water tank and bean hopper, the grinder settings, the controls and the number of drinks. We also check how the brew unit and milk parts come apart for cleaning.
Makers describe their own machines, so we name the brand for each claim. Words like "quiet" or "one-touch" are the maker's words, and we write them that way.
3. We read the manual
The manual shows how often a machine needs descaling, which descaler the maker wants and which parts can go in a dishwasher. That daily and monthly upkeep matters as much as the first cup.
4. We read owner feedback
We look at what owners say after months of use. We watch for patterns like leaks, grinder trouble, milk parts that are hard to clean and error lights that keep coming back.
One bad review doesn't sink a machine. A repeated pattern does.
5. We score each product
Each score weighs specs, upkeep and owner feedback against the reader the guide is written for. A machine that suits a latte lover can score lower in a guide for black coffee drinkers.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
6. We keep guides current
Coffee machine makers rename models and add new versions often. We check model numbers and link only to new machines, never renewed or used ones.
We skip machines with a known recall. When we update a guide, the date at the top changes too.
What our picks are not
Our picks come from research, not lab tests or home use. We don't claim to have brewed with every machine we cover.
These machines use hot water, steam and descaling liquids. Follow the maker's manual for cleaning and descaling, and use the descaler the maker names.
