Economy

By Naomi Taylor

Its in our price range, the bank guy said were approved.
What’s the monthly payment?
Its what you said we could afford plus $200
More a month for tax and insurance.
And you’re sure you can help with mortgage payment?
Yes, every month,
(Besides, with overtime he makes enough to pay it)
You know we can’t count on overtime, right?
Yeah, the bank okayed it on what you made last year
(Of course that included lots of overtime).
Overtime could stop any day
I know (he’s always had overtime, that’s why he can spend so much on his toys and stuff)
All right, lets do it.

I’m a little short this month on my part of the payment
All I have is $200.
I can’t afford this if you can’t help.
I know, I know, I’ll be able to pay more
Its just I had to make my car payment on my last check
(Besides, if he didn’t spend so much on useless junk he could pay it fine)
Jack told us to say goodbye to overtime.
Crap, for how long?
Till the economy gets better, no ones buying rock.
Shit.

Are you gonna be able to give me some money this Friday?
(Shoot, I wasn’t ready for that question)
Yeah I should be able to, I haven’t figured things up yet.
What does that mean? You know what you make.
I don’t know how many hours I’ll get till Friday.
Whatever.
(I have to put him off, the kids need things)

(I have enough for the car payment but I can go another week
They won’t repossess yet, I need to make a credit card payment
What if they call here, he doesn’t know about the card, he’ll flip
But I didn’t know what else to do when he said there was no
School shopping money, the kids had to have supplies and clothes and shoes.
If he finds out I’ll explain it, he’ll have to understand.)

The bank called again about the car payment.
Oh, well I’m paying them Friday.
Uh-uh.
(Piss on the car, they can have it).
You gonna be able to help out this week?
Yeah (I can put the credit card off another week to shut him up)
(Crap, I gotta get the paper; I need to get another job
That would be enough to pay everything)

Why isn’t there caller id on the phone?
I canceled everything but basic phone service, we can’t afford it.
Oh, all right (I can live with that, we never had it before anyway)
(Might as well get this over with) Cole has to have headgear, the orthodontist said if we don’t’ do it now, he’ll have to have jaw surgery when he’s older and his bottom teeth will ruin his tops ones.
How much?
$5,000, but there’s a bank that will give us a loan for it and
Only charges like one percent interest.
Yeah, okay whatever.
Its not my fault he needs this you know.
Yeah, I know, just do whatever.

I’m canceling the extra channels.
Okay (we can live with less TV).
We’ll have like 22 channels or something.
That sucks, but we can live without it,
The kids are gonna hate it though.
Too bad, we can’t afford it.
I know, has Jack said anything about overtime?
Rick and Marty got laid off, Rick can handle it.
Oh crap, are you in danger?
I’ve got seniority over a few more guys, but not many.

Did you cancel the Internet?
Yeah, and I’m canceling the phone next month.
Oh (we have the cell phones so its not a big deal, but going without internet.)
I’m thinking about canceling the garbage and recycling too
I can take the garbage to work, we have a big container,
And you can take recycling for free.
Yeah, okay.
Pick up the paper,
Why?
I got look for another job.
What’s going on?
Jack told us to start looking, unless we get a lot of trucks
Coming thru they’re gonna shut it down in December.
I thought when we chose the new president
It would help the economy stabilize.
Yeah.
Maybe when the new president takes office
The economy will get better?
That’s not gonna help us.
It might.
Yeah whatever.
